A gravel road leading through the forest with orange leaves on the trees and the ground

About this route

A straightforward route, however, requires some fitness and patience when tackling poorer forest and dirt roads. It leads through scenically attractive areas in the San River basin, including the forest complex south of Bircza, where the luxury hotel in Arłamów is located. The road will also take you through many Bieszczady villages that do not exist today; a testament to the difficult history of the region.

Practical advices

A route with a moderate level of difficulty will allow you to test your fitness. Remember that the terrain has a huge impact on how many kilometres you can cover. Trails on flat roads are less strenuous than those on hills or mountain roads.

Planning a group trip? Match the route to the fitness of the weakest participant.

A helmet and light clothing made of breathable materials will be essential for safety and comfort on the route. Other than that, only put on the essentials. Heavy luggage will make your ride more difficult. Also, think about what you will carry the necessary items in. We suggest a backpack or panniers for your bike.

Be prepared for possible breakdowns on the route. It is a good idea to carry the most important tools for a quick fix, such as inner tubes or patches, a pump or a multi-tool. Make sure you have enough water and food, as well as navigation equipment.

Is it looking like a warm and sunny day? Remember sunscreen and sunglasses. If you are planning sightseeing or other activities along the route, a bike lock will also be very useful. Before you leave, carefully examine your route for the trip. Consider whether your skills and equipment are adequate for the level of difficulty of the route.

Start your tour at the cyclists' shelter near the school in Iskań. Head south and follow the East of Poland Cycling Trail Green Velo. For the first few kilometres, you will have the San on your left, rolling its waters lazily. Leave it behind the forest, near the first buildings of Bachów, and continue along the main road in the general direction south. This will take you to the village of Brzuska, where it is worth stopping at a tserkva in a grove on the right-hand side of the road. Continue in the direction you had taken previously. You will enter the village of Sufczyna and then the village of Nowa Wieś. Eventually, you will reach Bircza. Along the way, stop at the numerous chapels, sometimes small and neglected, but very charming. You will also enjoy the countryside; the road goes along valley floors or low hill slopes, among buildings and fields.

In the village, it is worth riding up to the church and the Humnicki Palace next door. Although the church is only 100 years old, it is elegant and decorated in the Neo-Romanesque style. The Baroque main altar with its rich ornamentation is particularly impressive. The palace is a dusty architectural gem with quasi-defensive elements dating from the 19th century. It stands on the site of previous castles that were built here as early as the 16th century. Right next to it is a monument to soldiers killed in battles against Ukrainian nationalists. Leave the town via Fr Okoński Street, where there is an interesting old cemetery. Follow it straight ahead. The road will lead you through a forest near the Reberce reserve. You will travel almost 20 km through the forest, arriving at the Wecowska pass. Along the way, you will pass the defunct village of Łomna and the sparse buildings of Graziowa. Turn left there to reach the Pod Jamną pass, and there again turn left. When you emerge from the forest, you will have the luxury hotel in Arłamów and the peak of Turnica on your right. Then, through the now-defunct villages of Arłamów, Jamna Górna, Jamna Dolna and Trójca, you will reach the Wiar Valley and the Wiar Gorge. At the end of the road, turn left to Łodzinka Dolna and Łodzinka Górna. Behind the statue of St John of Nepomuk, it is worth turning right for a moment to the viewpoint and the monument to the battle fought here on 12th September 1939. You will then pass the Arłamów airfield and take the main road through Wola Korzeniecka back to Bircza.

In Bircza, turn right onto the national road no. 28. Turn left off it in Korzeńec just before the serpentine roads to pass Boguszówka. Stop at an escarpment that reveals a bare shale rock, typical of the Podkarpackie region. It is a testimony to the geological structure of the region. Note the clearly dissected layers of the rock and the fact that it is not a monolith, like granite or marble. Follow the main asphalt road ahead. It will lead you through forests and fields scattered on picturesque hills. In Huta Brzuska, go straight ahead. You will reach Brzuska. Turn right there. You know this route, don't you? Without deviating, you will reach the San River and then, with its current to the starting point in Iskań.
