Monument to the Airmen Fallen in Defence of the Polish Sky in Czaplaki
There are few places of well-documented aerial combat. The monument in Czaplaki reminds of the sacrifice of Polish airmen in September 1939. Contrary to claims of the destruction of Polish aviation in the first week of fighting, it fought the enemy in the air and on the ground. On 12th September 1939, two PZL P.23 Karaś machines attacked German tanks heading from Jarosław towards Oleszyce, when they encountered three Messerschmitt Bf-109 fighters. One of them survived the encounter, but the crew of the second, consisting of 2nd Lt. Leon Nowicki, Sr. Sgt. Konstanty Korzeniowski and Cpl. Mariusz Pszenny from the 3rd Air Regiment from Poznań, crashed in the shot-up plane in the forest. A commemorative stone was laid on this spot, with a plaque describing this small, but locally significant episode of World War II.
