A memento of the Jewish minority

Jewish cemetery in Baligród

The Jewish cemetery was established in the 18th century. It was a burial place for Jews from Baligród and the surrounding area, whose number was constantly growing - from 144 in 1764 to 2484 people at the beginning of the 20th century. The necropolis contains 200 gravestones that survived the occupation. Works to restore it to its proper condition have only recently begun. The restored tombstones, mostly made of sandstone, are small works of stonemasonry art. Among them, the most interesting is a tombstone (sarcophagus) from 1730.
