World War I Cemetery in Starzawa
Remnants of the forgotten World War I, which was overshadowed by the atrocities of the subsequent global conflict, are still visible in many places. They are usually war cemeteries, of which there are about a hundred in Podkarpackie. The cemetery in Starzawa, located near the border with Ukraine, recalls the heavy fighting that took place here between 13 and 16 June 1915 between the XXXXI Reserve Corps of the German Army and the retreating Russian divisions. The number of buried is estimated at 1200, and only 103 are known by name. On many, there are also details of the units in which the fallen served. In 1998, remains exhumed from Nakło were also transferred here. It is rare to see a clear outline of burial pits and a large number of preserved stone plates with surnames - usually, they were cast iron plates. In the necropolis area, there is a spire monument and a chapel.
