Village in the middle of the woods

Kochany

Kochany has always been a small village on the outskirts of larger ones. However, it was not spared from major historical events. Throughout the 19th century, the village was a border settlement between Austro-Hungary and Russia, which involved the existence of a customs chamber there. Even its location in the middle of the Janów Forest did not protect the village from tragedy; in 1942, the Germans murdered 39 inhabitants, including 20 children, and burnt down the buildings. The result was depopulation and the extinction of life in the village. At present, it is inhabited by 42 people. Kochany’s special features are its historical aspects; there are several memorials in the vicinity.
