Dominican Monastery in Jarosław
The spirit and opulence of the Counter-Reformation
Dominican Monastery in Jarosław
The monastery's history began in 1381 when shepherds found a statue of Mary holding crucified Jesus on her lap. The figure, brought to the church in Jarosław, miraculously returned to the place of discovery, so a small chapel was built there. A brick, Gothic church was built there in 1421, funded by Rafał Tarnowski. The current shape of the church was given to it during a renovation at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries in the Baroque style. The interior of the church is breathtaking – the massive altar in green-silver colours with the venerated miraculous figure in the centre field, harmonises with the figurative and geometric wall frescoes. It is also worth paying attention to the side altars and the rich stucco decoration on the walls, especially on the capitals of the pilasters and the extensive cornicing, as well as the ceiling paintings. You can clearly see the spirit and opulence of the Counter-Reformation here!
