Collegiate Church of Corpus Christi in Jarosław
The oldest Jesuit church in Poland
Collegiate Church of Corpus Christi in Jarosław
This massive church was built on a Greek-cross plan, oriented with the altar facing east. The main nave is formed by the crossing arms of the cross, rib-vaulted, and crowned with a turret. Between the west wall and the side naves, there are chapels covered with hefty domes. The structure is based on the general plan of the Roman church Il Gesu. The intricate stucco work on the facade, consisting of half-columns, pilasters with ornate capitals, and numerous friezes, is particularly striking. Dynamic stone statues adorn the wall in front of the temple. Inside, wall decorations mix with intricate figurative, geometric, and plant motif polychromies. The breathtaking main altar, massive and occupying the entire apse, is in black and gold colours. Nearby are the remaining buildings of the former Jesuit college. It is worth mentioning that this collegiate church is the oldest Jesuit church in Poland.
