How to prepare your bicycle for a trip around Podkarpackie

Not all areas of Podkarpackie are impassable or extremely difficult wildernesses of the Bieszczady region, as the central part of the region is hilly, and the north - plains. However, a conscious cyclist must be prepared for any occasion and keep their vehicle fully ready.

The bicycle review begins with a general inspection. Is the vehicle clean? Are there any cracks in the frame, signs of rust? Does the entire structure show appropriate rigidity? Is there any squeaking during the ride? The answers to these questions should be exclusively positive. Although a perfectly cleaned bicycle free of mud does not indicate its technical efficiency, it is worth ensuring that dirt does not accumulate in places where it can lead to rust or block crucial mechanisms, e.g., proper functioning of the brakes.

The bicycle's drivetrain consists of the wheels and the chain drive. When examining the condition of the wheels, pay attention to the depth of the tread and the sides of the tyres, which may crack with age or due to mechanical damage. Check if the spokes are properly tensioned, and if the wheel hub operates smoothly. If necessary, apply a bit of grease to facilitate its operation.

Looking at the condition of the drivetrain, you need to pay attention to a larger number of elements. Ask yourself: are the pedals in good condition, not cracked, and with a complete set of reflectors? Is there no play in the main bearing (bottom bracket)? Does the crank operate smoothly? Are the teeth of the sprocket straight and properly guiding the chain? Does the front derailleur work efficiently? Moving on, check if the chain is not excessively stretched and does not skip during a ride with a load. Finally - the rear derailleur. Does it change gears smoothly? Is it clean and not jamming, are there no delays in gear changes relative to the shifter movement? You can preventatively clean and lubricate the chain and sprockets, using silicone lubricants.

An extremely important element requires an extremely careful approach. Regardless of whether you have disc brakes or another type on your bicycle, check the wear level of the brake pads and adjust their position if necessary, eliminating rubbing and squeaking. Remember, your safety depends on the brakes both during calm rides and wild off-road descents.

Accessories such as phone holders, odometers, or navigation, as well as panniers and other bags, must be attached in a way that prevents them from unwanted shifting during your journey, even during significant shocks. Also, take care of the closures of panniers and bags, so nothing falls out on the way. Lighting is also considered an accessory - clean the reflectors, check the batteries and the setting of all lights, and the loudness of the bell.
